For healthy and efficient service from paints generally, it is important that certain precautions are observed. The chemical range from which paints are manufactured demand for wide ranging care to be observed.

Hazards:

Inflammability Most chemicals are flammable, some of them so dangerously. The temperatures at
which some chemicals will ignite if introduced to a naked flame are so low, some even spontaneously. It is generally safe to instruct all operations to take place without exposing a naked flame i.e. cigarette smoking, machine grinding which liberates live sparks, etc. while dealing with paints. This applies to both water-based paints and solvent based paints.
Breathing In some cases, nicotine gas from tobacco will react with certain chemical fumes to form a toxic gas that is harmful to human body systems.
Skin Contact Contact with bare skin and eyes could be harmful as some of the chemicals are corrosive, itchy and could lead to dermatitis (a skin deficiency )
Swallowing Some chemicals, especially industrial alcohols and especially solvents, if swallowed will cause blindness.

Remedial Attention

Apparel

Head Wear cap or helmet while painting for the protection of the head.
Eyes Wear goggles for the protection of the eyes.
Nose and mouth Wear breathing masks to avoid inhalation of toxic gases or floating chemicals.
Body and clothes Wear overalls or dustcoats.
Hands Wear rubber gloves while handling corrosive materials.
Feet Wear protective boots, for the protection of feet and toes.
Height Use appropriate ladders, well secured, if painting areas well above normal reach.

Chemical Activity

Inflammability No Smoking while painting
No exposure to naked flames or live sparks in painting area.
Fresh Air Open all shutters while painting is going on. If painting in an enclosed environment i.e. inside tankers, wear breathing masks.
Swallowing If paint or chemical is accidentally swallowed, induce vomiting and seek medical attention immediately.
Skin contact Most decorative paints, water based or oil-solvent based, will wash off hands with water and domestic or industrial detergent. If an itchy feeling is experienced, wash with plenty of fresh water and apply skin lotion. Seek medical attention if situation persists.
Eyes contact As the eyes are an exceptionally sensitive part of the body, any contact with the eyes should be referred to medical practitioner as soon as possible.
