Bittiness:

This defect which takes the form of specks and small blotches on an otherwise smooth painted surface can usually be attributed to the careless preparation of the surface, and to lack general cleanliness during the actual painting operation. Among the contributory causes are insufficient dusting off; the application of a paint which (either through poor quality or long storage) contains large pigment particles or broken paint skins; the use of dirty brushes and containers or unclean spraying apparatus and dirty painting is in progress to prevent contamination of the surface. The sanding of adjacent surface should also be completed prior to commencement of painting.

Remedy:

The treatment for bittiness is to sand down the surface to smooth when dry, strain the paint if necessary, and repaint using clean equipment after ensuring that the surface is both clean and dry. Finally, as a precaution, make sure that the atmosphere is dust free, both at the time of application and during the drying period, to avoid dust settling on the wet paint.
